Easter with the Locals And Thunderstorms Limit Patients Today

The group celebrated the Easter holiday with the locals yesterday. Everyone loved it. They went to a nearby church (in the photo) and all the locals seemed to really enjoy their company. Most of the group went to the services, but three people stayed behind to tend to patients who came to the clinic. Sunday afternoon, the group saw a total of 208 patients and patients came from towns like Benen, Rio Colorado and Las Mercedes.

The students are all doing great. They all want to be fluent in Spanish and are doing a good job of communicating with the patients. The pharmacy, run by faculty member Bob Streilein is running well. The pharmacy is in a separate area from where the patients are seen in the new clinic (which will fully open this summer). Right now the clinic does not yet have doors and windows.

Some heavy rain and thunderstorms made their way through the area overnight. Dennis said it rained for 18 hours. Due to the conditions on the ground, a truck full of Hondurans from the town of Quebrada Honda could not make it to Las Mercedes today. So, it's been a slower day than usual. But, the group expects it to pick up tomorrow and the truck from Quebrada Honda should be able to make the trip. This morning, the group only saw about 30 patients.

The water stopped working early this morning, so students had some problems with showers and flushing of toilets, but it has since been fixed!

Now for NCAA news: The Honduras group had quite a party after the final four victory on Sunday night, and they are hoping to have another one tonight. They plan to call in for score updates throughout the championship game. Lets Go Duke!
